Billy James Suggs, 92 of Idabel, passed away June 26, 2023 at Durant, Oklahoma. He was born at Idabel
on October 10, 1930 the son of Elsie Faye and Patrick Dyle Suggs.
Bill grew up in the times of no electricity and no indoor plumbing. He and his family drove the wagon
into town. They lived in Idabel but moved to California and then Oregon during World War 2 following
work wherever it led them. He was a fleet footed football star in the late 1940’s at Idabel and still holds
the record to this day.
Shortly after having Joe Pat and Jan, Bill served in the United States Army. After his discharge he lived in
Ponca City and worked as a delivery man for Rainbow Bread and Coca Cola.
He met and married Sylvia “Bernice” and they settled in Irving, Texas, once again following where work
led them in the construction industry. After raising Conrad, they were able to move home and settle
back in Idabel in 1981.
An avid hunter early in life, Bill was more of a fisherman by the time they’d moved back to Idabel. He
enjoyed pond fishing and lake fishing. It didn’t matter if he was catching bass, crappie or catfish, he
loved fishing.
Bill is survived by his wife, Sylvia Bernice Suggs; daughter, Jan Coffman and husband Joe; son, Conrad
Vickroy and wife KaNan; brothers, Lynn Scott and wife Dee, Perry Scott and wife JoAnn; sister, Marsha
Reed and husband, Jerry; grandchildren, Jake Coffman, John Coffman, Cameron Vickroy, Carson Vickroy;
great-grandchildren, Christian Coffman and Skylar Coffman; numerous nieces, nephews and many more
relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Elsie Faye Scott; father, Patrick Dyle Suggs; son, John Patrick
“Joe Pat” Suggs; and brother, Thomas “Junior” Scott.
