On January 6, 2023, Jewel Turnage passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 91 years
old. She was born to Johnny and Sadie Rolen on March 11, 1931 in Pollard, OK and was a
lifelong resident of McCurtain County. Jewel loved small town life, spending her time gardening,
quilting, working in her yard and visiting with her many friends and neighbors. Jewel always
made time for friends, provided support for many neighbors and had a great love for her family.
Jewel enjoyed hosting family dinners with her sons and their families at her home, especially on
the holidays. Jewel enjoyed cooking, hunting and fishing throughout her life, but mostly being a
mother and grandmother to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jewel enjoyed
sharing stories of her childhood, sharing traditions from her mother and grandmother, and
memories of her late grandparents, parents, siblings, and husband. Stories such as, attending
church as a child with her grandmother in Pollard, where she was baptized, walking along the
dirt road with her siblings, picnicking under a large tree near the family homestead, and hunting
with Emmit and their sons were some of her favorites.
Jewel retired from Kellwood, where she was a product inspector for many years. Jewel was
proud of her accomplishments, through her employment, and shared her ability to pay attention
to detail and fine tune products to perfection with her family.
Jewel was predeceased by her parents, the love of her life, Emmit Turnage, who were wedded
on March 13, 1948, and her brothers, Charlie Rolen, Delmer Rolen and Kenneth Rolen. She is
survived by her sister, Velma Brassfield; her two sons, both of Idabel, Larry Turnage and Danny
& his wife Patricia Sue Turnage; four grandchildren, Teresa & her husband Mack Jr. Davis,
Shannon Turnage, Lizzy & her husband Eddie Tate, and Miranda & her husband David Jr.
McKinney; ten great-grandchildren, Aaron Davis, Taylor & her husband Justin Friend, James
(Trey) & his wife Kayla DeForrest, Avery Dollar and Kaydance, Michael, Austin, David III,
Raelena & Olen McKinney; two great-great grandchildren, Peyton and Emma Friend; and a host
of family and friends.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hand To Hand, PO Box 24,
Haworth, OK 74740, in honor of Jewel Turnage, as it was a passion of hers to provide for those
who were struggling and support those in need.
A visitation will be held at Clardy Funeral Service on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 from 6:00 p.m.
to 8:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held on 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at
Canfield Cemetery in Idabel, OK where Jewel will be laid to rest next to her husband Emmit
