JoAnn Strawn Obituary

JoAnn German Strawn, 83 of Idabel, passed away January 16, 2024 at Idabel, Oklahoma. She was born
March 28, 1940 at Idabel, Oklahoma, the daughter of Willie and Eva German. She married Pascal Ray “Pete” Strawn at Idabel, on September 17, 1960. They had six children.

As a young lady, she waited tables at her parents’ restaurant on main. She began working at the treasurer’s office August 15, 1975 and continued through 2011, elected as the McCurtain County Treasurer from 2000 to 2011. She wasn’t just employed by the McCurtain County Treasurer’s office, she served the community and was dedicated to her job. Upon retirement in 2011 she began volunteering for the McCurtain Memorial Hospital’s Ladies Auxiliary.  She had a true passion and commitment to serving others, volunteering over 6500 hours of her time at the hospital up until just a few months ago. She helped organize and prepare for the events for the Relay for Life and was also a member of the McCurtain County Historical Society.  She never wanted recognition for anything she contributed.  She just loved serving people.

JoAnn was a very private person.  Even in her times of struggle, she would say “I’m fine”or “I’m okay”.  Despite always being fine or okay, she had a passion for helping others.  She was a firm believer in sending cards…. sympathy cards, thinking of you cards, thank you cards, cards for all holidays, occasions and birthday cards. All the grandkids loved receiving their cards, often times with money inside.  Her great-grandkids were her pride and joy and she was dedicated to attending as many of their events as she could.

JoAnn is survived by her sons, James “Jimmy” Virgil Strawn and Beth Mullins of Livingston, Texas, Virgil Pascal “Bubba” Strawn of Idabel, Michael Ray Strawn of Idabel; daughters, Debra McGee of Valliant and her special friend Ray Lynn Moore, Cathy Sims and husband Bill of Shady Point, Oklahoma, Kim Goodman and husband Randy of Idabel; seven grandchildren, Matelan Sims and wife Lacy, Colby McGee and wife Cheyanne, Ethan Strawn, Jordan Strawn, Abbi Strawn, Kyla Strawn, Raylynn Strawn; four great-grandchildren, Ryker and Brynix Sims and Fisher and Sutton McGee; brothers, Willie German Jr of Holly Lake, Texas, Lynn Paul German and wife, Sylvia of Abilene, Texas, Bruce German and wife Pat of Euless, Texas; sisters, Sonya Ginn of Idabel, Lorene Eldred and husband Joe of Idabel, Bonnie Pierce and husband James of Gilmer, Texas; brother-in-law, Bill Womack; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
