Joe A. Strickland

Joe A. Strickland, 89, of the Farmer’s Hill Community, out of Garvin, passed away on January 25, 2020, at Memorial Heights Nursing Home in Idabel, Oklahoma.

He was born in Golden, OK, on February 19, 1930, to W.M. and Mary Ellen (Ray) Strickland.

Joe and Eva Burks were United in marriage on December 3, 1949, in DeQueen, Arkansas, and shared sixty-one years together.

Joe attended school at Wright City and Valliant. He enjoyed rodeoing in his younger days.  After marriage, Thelmer Davis of Idabel helped him get his first job operating a bull dozer on pipe line construction. He worked for R.H. Fulton and Williams Brothers before buying 60 acres that he referred to as the Red Hill Ranch. He and Eva moved there permanently in 1964.

Joe did dozer work for Bobby Love before going into the trenching and backhoe business. He served many years as superintendent of the Forest Grove Rural Water District and as the grave digger for Mc Curtain County.

He is survived by his son, Nyles and wife, LuAnna Strickland of Farmer’s Hill; two daughters, Sharon and husband, Bill Bain of Valliant and Kathy Sharrock of Broken Bow; six grandchildren: Natalie Hefti , Asia Strickland, Barth and Brad Bain, David Sharrock and Becky Cassidy and 7 great grandchildren.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife Eva; his parents; three brothers Bill, Herman, and Ed; and son-in-law, Ronnie Sharrock.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Forest Hill Cemetery Fund.  

Funeral services are set for Monday, January 27, 2020 at 2:00 pm at the Forest Hill Baptist Church with Pastor Russell McDaniel officiating. Visitation will be at the church at 1:00 pm, prior to the service.
