November 26, 1955 ~ April 23, 2022 (age 66)

Obituary

Roger D. Kuykendall, 66, was born November 26, 1955 to RD and Jean Kuykendall in Paris, Texas. Roger grew up in Idabel Oklahoma graduating from High School in 1974. Roger attended Oklahoma State University where he met the love of his life, his wife, Julie. Roger and Julie were married in Cordell, Oklahoma on January 20, 1979. Roger worked as an assistant manager at TG&Y until he got hired on with Southwestern Bell as a lineman in 1981 in Enid, Ok. He obtained the nickname “Animal”, which stayed with him rest of his life. While in Enid he began to dabble in photography which developed into a full-blown professional side career. Including having photos published in magazines worldwide. In 1985 Roger and Julie welcomed their first child a little girl called April to the world. Roger continued working for the Bell phone company, until his retirement, which included a move to Georgia in 1988. The move was complicated by the fact Julie was very pregnant, but everything worked out and they gave birth to a beautiful baby girl in Georgia named Stephany.  Also in Georgia, Roger pursued his dream of becoming a Shriner, in which he found a close brotherhood of philanthropists working for kids. After his retirement he took to the road selling BBQ for special events in his custom build 44ft trailer. Later catering to the masses during Bikeweek and Biketoberfest at the Iron Horse in Florida. In 2014 and 2016 Roger was blessed with grandchildren. His health waned and during one of the trips to Florida in 2021 he had to be admitted to the hospital. 7 months later after being in and out of the hospitals in Florida he passed peacefully away holding his wife’s hand at The Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale on April 23, 2022.

Roger was preceded in death by his father RD Kuykendall and his father in-law Edgar A Dennis.

He was survived in life by his wife, Julie Kuykendall; daughter, April Mechtly and Mike Mechtly, daughter, Stephany and Sean Sullivan; grandchildren Alexiel and James Mechtly; mother, Jean Kuykendall; mother in-law, Sharline Dennis; brother, Bill and Dana Kuykendall numerous other relatives and friends.

Roger loved being a Shriner and would have preferred donations to the Shriners hospital in lieu of flowers.

Funeral services will be held at Clardy Funeral Service in Idabel on Saturday April 30, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. Family will receive friends prior to the funeral service at the funeral home beginning at 1:00 p.m.
