Velma Brassfield, 88 of Garvin, passed away February 26, 2025 at Plano, Texas. She was born April 20,
1936 at the Pleasant Hill Community, the daughter of Sadie and Johnny Rolen. She married Joe
Brassfield at the Assembly of God Church in Garvin on January 8, 1978 and they spent their honeymoon
in Hawaii. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe; brothers, Charlie Rolen, twin,
Delmer Rolen, Kenneth Rolen; and sister, Jewel Turnage.
A devout Christian woman, Velma loved church, friends and family. She was the best mom and step-
mom anyone could ask for. She spent twenty-seven years as a phone operator for Southwestern Bell
before becoming a homemaker. She enjoyed life to the fullest and spent a lot of time gardening and
tending to her flowers. She was a very good cook, but her mashed potatoes and potato salad were
unmatched. There was always a western on her television when you visited her home as well as the
many neighborhood cats she fed and cared for. Her hobbies were spending time with her husband
fishing, playing games and puzzles, teasing her friends and family and just having fun.
Velma is survived by her children, Delila Bates, Joe Brassfield, Oscar Brassfield and wife Stacey;
grandchildren, Robert Brassfield, Adrian Brassfield, Shanette Lambe and husband Kolten, Nathan
Brassfield and wife Maci; great-grandchildren, Braxton Lambe, Everleigh Brassfield, nephews, Danny
Turnage and wife Sue, Larry Turnage; numerous other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2025 at the Garvin Cemetery
Pavilion with Delila Bates officiating. Interment will follow.
