Velma Jean John passed away January 16, 2019 at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born February 11, 1949 at Haworth, the daughter of Jonah and Pearl Frazier. Her education was achieved in boarding schools at Carter Seminary in Ardmore and Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas.
The following years were spent at various jobs in California, Arizona and back to this area. She went into nursing and earned her degree as a registered nurse. Thereafter her nursing career spanned hospitals in Oklahoma City, Clarksville, Texas and lastly in Idabel. Intervening time was spent in various nursing homes and home health facilities in this area. As a result of her outstanding expertise as a nurse, patients, nursing colleagues and doctors will always remember her. She was even a mentor to some of the nurses who provided care for her in the end.
She is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-law, Everett John and Sarah Hughart of Coweta and DeWayne John of the home; two grandchildren, Alani of Coweta and Jalen of the home; two sisters, Evelyn Shields and Dorothy Holden both of Oklahoma City; numerous nieces nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
She and husband Dean, settled in Wright City where they raised their two sons. Their fruitful lives, including sports, gospel singing and family reunions annually for many years, shaped the legacy we’ll continue to enjoy the rest of our lives.
Velma will always be cherished and never forgotten. Her love and spirit will stay with us and get us through this sad time.
A celebration of life service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, January 18, 2019 at the Clardy Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Rosa Baker officiating. Interment will follow in the Denison Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening, January 17, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Clardy Funeral Service Chapel.
